Brand History

Nearly Two Centuries of Innovation

1838
German entrepreneur Joseph Anton von Maffei (1790-1870) founded the family business "Hirschau Locomotive Factory" and acquired Munich's first mechanical engineering plant, officially beginning KraussMaffei's illustrious history.
1841
The first locomotive built at Hirschau was delivered to a customer. King Ludwig I named the locomotive "Munich".
1866
Georg von Krauss (1828-1906), previously employed by Maffei, founded the competing company Krauss & Company at Munich's Marsfeld.
1867
The first locomotive built by Krauss, "Landwührden," won a gold medal at the World's Fair in Paris, France, for its advanced design. Today, this locomotive is still on display at the Deutsches Museum's "Verkehrszentrum."
1892
Hermann Berstorff founded Hermann Berstorff Maschinenbau GmbH in Hanover and began producing hose manufacturing machines for the rubber industry.
1909
Krauss and Maffei began producing electric locomotives.
1931
Against the backdrop of the global economic crisis, Krauss acquired Maffei. The merged company was named Lokomotivfabrik Krauss & Comp.-J.A. Maffei A.-G. Munich, continuing locomotive manufacturing as its core business.
1935
The newly merged company relocated to Allach near Munich. Three years later, Krauss-Maffei celebrated its 100th anniversary, pledging to uphold the corporate values championed by Joseph Anton von Maffei.
1940
The company entered a new phase: Lokomotivfabrik Krauss-Maffei was renamed Krauss-Maffei AG, the predecessor of today's KraussMaffei Group. Business divisions included transportation technology and process engineering.
1956
In the 1950s, Krauss-Maffei AG entered the plastics industry, began developing injection molding machines, and eventually acquired plastics machinery manufacturer Eckert & Ziegler.
1968
Krauss-Maffei AG established a reaction molding machinery division, with its first products being automotive bumpers and dashboards.
1989
German industrial and telecommunications company Mannesmann acquired a majority stake in Krauss-Maffei AG, becoming the sole shareholder in 1996.
1999/2000
The Mannesmann Group was acquired by British mobile phone company Vodafone Group and subsequently dissolved. Krauss-Maffei AG then focused exclusively on plastics and rubber machinery manufacturing. The locomotive business was acquired by Siemens, and other related operations by Wegmann & Co.
2001
Krauss-Maffei AG was renamed KraussMaffei AG and officially entered the Chinese market.
2005
A factory was established in Haiyan, Zhejiang Province, opening a new chapter of localized production and services in China.
2010
KraussMaffei's factory in Slovakia began operations.
2016
Joined China Sinochem (formerly ChemChina) as a member company.
2019
KraussMaffei, KraussMaffei Berstorff, and Netzsch merged into a single unified brand — KraussMaffei.
2020
The Jiaxing integrated production base was completed and put into operation, the only comprehensive functional headquarters outside of Germany.
2022/2023
A new era: after 90 years in Allach, the Group headquarters relocated to Paddorf near Munich. The KraussMaffei extrusion factory also moved to Laatzen near Hanover, becoming the Group's innovation center for recycling solutions.
2025
KraussMaffei China was designated as a "Special Zone" enterprise by China Sinochem, receiving greater authorization from the KraussMaffei Group to accelerate a "self-reliant, independent, and self-strengthening" development model, driving local innovation and global synergy.
